Swish Installers Lead The Way In Door and
Window Recycling
SWDS/005 April 2008
On average each person in the UK throws away their own body weight in rubbish every seven weeks, with enough waste produced every eight months to fill an area the size of Lake Windermere.
Despite such alarming statistics, the amount of household waste collected for recycling is on the increase, with more consumers realising the importance of reducing their footprint on the environment. Glass, paper, aluminium, textiles and green waste are routinely recycled, and now householders can take advantage of a new unique recycling service from Swish Windows and Door Systems to recycle old PVCu windows and doors.
The service brings thousands of tonnes of old PVCu products back into use, instead of sending them to landfill. This post-consumer waste includes old early generation windows and doors, much of which is now more than 30 years old.
Paul Lindsay of Swish, said: “Historically, doors and windows would simply go to landfill but we can now recycle them into a new generation of advanced products. Swish’s continued R&D, plus investment in a dedicated sorting centre has given us the capacity to separate glass, rubber, concrete and PVCu. Once separated, old PVCu frames are then ground down and further refined using sophisticated technology to produce a new high-quality product.”
As homeowners fit new more advanced PVCu products, this old material provides an important resource of raw material for use in new windows and doors.
With an average lifespan of 35 years, PVCu products can go through this recycling process more than 10 times whilst still maintaining performance. This gives each product a total lifespan of 400 years or more, making PVCu one of the most sustainable materials used by the housebuilding industry.
